Biography

Formed in Dublin, Ireland in 2003, The Coronas are a hugely successful band in their homeland. Originally a trio, the band was founded by Danny O’Reilly (son of Irish music legend Mary Black), Graham Knox, and Conor Egan. The three had previously been members of a quartet by the name of Kiros, but they broke off and initially called their new band Corona. Wanting to avoid confusion with the Italian band of the same name, the trio changed their name to The Coronas. By the time they recorded their 2007 debut album, Ghosts, the band had become a quartet with the addition of guitarist and vocalist Dave McPhillips. Their second album, Tony Was an Ex-Con, was released in 2009 proved to be their commercial breakthrough and reached Number 3 on the Irish charts. Singles from the album included “Listen Dear” and “Someone Else’s Hands”. The band played many high-profile tour dates alongside acts like The Script. They also opened for Paul McCartney in 2010. Their next album, Closer to You (2011) also reached Number 3 in the charts. The 2014 album The Long Way reached Number 2 and contained their highest charting single to date, “All the Others”, which hit Number 3. Their next album, Trust the Wire, landed at the Number 1 spot after it’s June 2017 release. The album proved to be the last album with Dave McPhillips, who left the band in mid-2019. The Coronas returned as a trio with their fifth album, True Love Waits, in July, 2020. The album reached the Number 1 position.
