Philippe Jaroussky

A virtuoso vocalist, French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky (born in Maisons-Laffitte on February 13, 1978) is also co-founder of the Artaserse ensemble, which has made Vivaldi and Handel its preferred repertoire. After Vivaldi Heroes (2006), he pays tribute to castratos through one of their most illustrious figures, with the disc Carestini, The Story of a Castrato (2007). Adulated for the purity of his voice's timbre, but far from resting on his laurels, the singer surprises with Opium: Mélodies Françaises (2009) and a program devoted to French melody. In 2012, the countertenor returned to castrato voices with Leonardo Vinci's opera Artaserse. At the same time, the compilation La Voix des Rêves is the classical music success of the end of the year. 2013 sees the release of the long-awaited Farinelli recital, featuring arias composed by Nicola Porpora. The following year, Pietà brought together sacred works by Vivaldi, including the Stabat Mater and Salve Regina. This sales success is followed by a tribute to Paul Verlaine featuring Nathalie Stutzmann and the Quatuor Ébène: Green - Mélodies Françaises sur des Poèmes de Verlaine (2015). Philippe Jaroussky goes on to record sacred cantatas by Bach and Telemann, then, with Hungarian soprano Emöke Baráth, performs arias from three operas by Monteverdi, Sartorio and Rossi in La Storia di Orfeo (2017). With each new album, the countertenor continues to broaden his musical horizons, with his ensemble in Ombra Mai Fiu (2019) or La Vanità del Mondo (2020), with Thibaut Garcia in À Sa Guitare (2021) or with Le Concert de la Loge conducted by Julien Chauvin in Forgotten Arias (2023). In 2023, he takes part in the soundtrack to the film Il Boemo, dedicated to the composer Myslivecek, then performs a repertoire in which he is not expected on Schubert: Lieder (2024), with pianist Jérôme Ducros.
