Utada Hikaru

Hikaru Utada, born on January 19, 1983, also known simply as Utada, is a Japanese singer, songwriter, and producer, widely regarded as one of Japan's most influential and successful musical artists. Utada was born in the United States to Japanese parents who both worked in the entertainment industry. Showing an early talent for music, Utada began writing songs and lyrics at a young age, often traveling to Tokyo due to her father's career. After signing with Toshiba-EMI, Utada released her debut English-language album, Precious under the name Cubic U in 1998, which did not achieve commercial success. However, the following year, she made a significant impact with her Japanese-language debut album, First Love, heavily influenced by R&B and dance-pop. Bolstered by hit singles like "Automatic," "Time Will Tell," and "Movin' On Without You," the album became an instant success, selling two million copies in its first week in Japan and eventually becoming the country's best-selling album of all time. Utada's career continued to soar with the release of Distance in early 2001, featuring chart-topping singles such as "Addicted to You," "Wait & See (Risk)," and "Can You Keep a Secret?".Her subsequent albums, including folk-pop album Deep River, Exodus, Ultra Blue, and Heart Station, all achieved immense commercial success. Following a hiatus, Utada returned to the music scene with acoustic-driven albums Fantôme (2016) and Hatsukoi (2018), both of which reached Number 1 on the Oricon albums chart. She continued her success with Bad Mode in 2022, her first Japanese/English album, which also reached the top of the charts. With over 40 million records sold, she is one of Japan's top-selling recording artists, with twelve singles and ten albums reaching Number 1 on the Oricon charts. Internationally, Utada is known for her contributions to the video game series Kingdom Hearts, providing theme songs such as "Simple and Clean," "Sanctuary," "Don't Think Twice," and "Face My Fears." In April 2024, Utada released a greatest hits album titled Science Fiction to commemorate her 25th anniversary since her debut in 1998.
