Anna Regina Kalk was born in Tartu, Estonia. Her musical journey began at the age of twelve when she started studying classical guitar. During her teenage years, she discovered rock music, playing Nirvana covers on the electric guitar before transitioning to jazz guitar.
She began her jazz studies at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in Tallinn. After two years, she continued her education in Germany, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar under the guidance of Professor Frank Möbus. She then completed a master's degree with honors in jazz music performance at the Bern University of the Arts in Switzerland, where she studied with renowned musicians such as Ronny Graupe, Kalle Kalima, Alexandra Grimal, Jim Black, Ralph Alessi, and Django Bates.
Anna Kalk is a versatile guitarist and composer, performing in various ensembles, including Assonance, Noblique, Kalk/Baillod/Kaeser, EDNA, Anemoon, and the Anna Kalk Quartet.
In 2022, Anna Regina Kalk was awarded the Tiit Paulus Prize as Estonia’s best young guitarist and released her debut album PRACTICAL MATTERS with the chamber jazz trio Assonance. Together with Paul Butscher (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Loïc Baillod (double bass), she presents original compositions that highlight the beauty in everyday life. The album was praised for its subtle sonic aesthetics and the harmonious interaction between the musicians. It blends well-crafted arrangements with free improvisation, creating an introspective atmosphere.
