London-based pianist and composer Aliya Lark has announced her debut album 'Sparks'. The record finds Aliya Lark blending her delicate, minimalist piano compositions with subtle ambient textures and nuanced synthetic flourishes.
Taking inspiration from the emotive, genteel post-classical work of artists like Nils Frahm and Hauschka, 'Sparks' sees Aliya craft modest yet deeply evocative musical vignettes. Straightforward melodies and uncluttered harmonic beds provide the foundation, adorned with carefully-chosen sonic embellishments.
"The album tells the story of beginning a new journey, where the main character tries to find unconventional beauty in ordinary things without looking back at the past - the meekness of glances, the frugality of touches, the warmth of a fading candle, the dissipation of fog," Aliya describes. A yearning for simple, at times sentimental forms permeates the compositions.
Aliya Lark collaborated with London electronic producer Pavel Doronin, who imbued the piano pieces with an aura of nostalgia through artificially-aged field recordings captured around East London. "I wanted Aliya's music to evoke feelings like old photographs that capture moments that are a pleasure to remember," Doronin explains.
The album was mastered by the legendary producer and engineer Taylor Deupree at 12k Mastering in New York.
With its deeply poignant sound world, 'Sparks' introduces Aliya Lark as a new voice in modern piano music.
