Biography

A reggae legend with a wonderfully smooth, soft voice, Horace Andy was one of the great Jamaican stars of the 1970s before being reborn in the 1990s as a key contributor to trip hop act Massive Attack. A protégé of Coxsone Dodd's Studio One, Andy (real name Horace Hinds) found fame when early single Skylarking topped the Jamaican charts and became his classic signature tune. His partnership with producer Bunny Lee led to a string of local hits throughout the 1970s including Money Is The Root Of All Evil, Children of Israel, You Are My Angel and Something On My Mind, before he relocated first to Connecticut, then in the 1980s to Ladbroke Grove, London. He recorded with Bim Sherman, Errol Scorcher and Dennis Brown, but was introduced to a new audience when he starred on Massive Attack's classic album Blue Lines in 1990. Andy went on to become a permanent fixture of the group and sing lead vocals on the single Angel (a reworking of one of his classic tracks), as well as featuring on the cult compilation record Radiodread (2006) - a collection of Radiohead songs covered by reggae stars.
