Formed in 1973, Showaddywaddy were the amalgamation of two Leicester bands, The Choise and Golden Hammers, making them an eight-piece with an unusual line-up featuring two singers, two drummers and two bass players. They got their big break on UK TV talent show New Faces, winning one show and becoming runners-up in the All-Winners Final, resulting in their self-written debut single Hey Rock & Roll, which reached Number 2 in the UK charts in 1974. It was the first of 22 hits - mostly rock'n'roll revivalism tracks - including covers of Eddie Cochran's Three Steps To Heaven, Buddy Holly's Heartbeat and Curtis Lee's Under The Moon Of Love, their one chart-topper, which sold a million. Later cover hits included I Wonder Why (Dion & the Belmonts), Blue Moon (The Marcels) and Pretty Little Angel Eyes (Curtis Lee). Although the hits dried up in the 1980s, the band have remained a popular live attraction playing good-time rock'n'roll shows with shifting line-ups (Buddy Gask died in 2011) and releasing occasional albums, like The Sun Album in 2008.
