Bruce Springsteen is one of the globe's most iconic rock & roll front men, renowned for his larger-than-life concerts, his socially conscious songwriting, and lyrics that examine the hardships of working-class Americans. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, on September 23, 1949, he launched his career as a teenager, playing in bands like The Castiles, Earth, Steel Mill, and Dr Zoom & the Sonic Boom before signing with Columbia Records as a solo act. Although his debut album, 1973's Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ, was far from a commercial success, Bruce Springsteen assembled a soon-to-be-legendary group of backing musicians, The E Street Band, and won a fervent following as a thrilling live act. His 1975 album Born to Run turned him into an international superstar, paving the way for a long, acclaimed career that now includes multiple platinum-selling albums, 20 Grammy Awards, more than 20 international tours, and even a Tony-winning run on Broadway. Bruce Springsteen's explosive, working-class anthems have seen ‘The Boss’ becoming one of pop culture's most influential artists, even appearing at the inauguration of President Obama in 2009. Throughout his career, he has released over 20 studio albums and more than 70 singles. His most successful album, 1984's Born in the U.S.A., is the one of the best-selling albums in history, while records like The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995), We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (2006), and Western Stars (2019) have found him embracing the sounds of folk and American roots music. He was inducted into the Songwriters and the Rock & Roll Halls of Fame in 1999 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. Bruce Springsteen on Broadway, a Tony-winning stage production, ran at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York for eight weeks in 2017, winning a Tony Award for his production. Although he performed the show alone, he reunited with The E Street Band for 2020's universally acclaimed Letter to You. In 2022, Bruce Springsteen released his second album of cover versions, Only the Strong Survive, which contained his interpretations of soul and R&B songs originally recorded by artists such as the Four Tops, Jerry Butler, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Ben E. King, and many others. The album featured guest vocals from Sam & Dave’s Sam Moore, who appeared on two tracks.
