Vocalist/guitarist Bobby Vylan and drummer Bobbie Vylan formed the British duo Bob Vylan in 2017. Based in London, England, the two musicians created a sound inspired by grime, hip-hop, punk, dancehall, and rap-rock, mixing together influences together during a number of early shows. Rather than sign with a record label, Bob Vylan formed their own, Ghost Theatre, and used that label to self-release their 2017 debut EP, Vylan, as well as their 2019 follow-up, Dread. Both EPs featured lyrics that explored socio-political issues like racial inequality, homophobia, and income inequity. Those themes also appeared on Bob Vylan's full-length debut, We Live Here, which was released amidst the Covid-19 pandemic in August 2020. When touring resumed the following year, the group performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals and supported acts like the Offspring on the road. They also began working on their second album, Bob Vylan Presents the Price of Life, which became their commercial breakthrough upon its release in 2022. Named "Best Album" at that year's Kerrang! Awards, the record peaked at number 18 on the Official UK Albums Chart. It also helped earn Bob Vylan the title of "Best Alternative Music Act" at the MOBO Awards that same year. In 2024, Bob Vylan returned with Humble as the Sun, another topical record that reached number 22 on the Official Albums chart, Number 1 on the Official UK Hip Hop and R&B chart, and number 11 in Scotland.
