Born in the immediate aftermath of grunge, American band Seven Mary Three (also abbreviated 7 Mary 3 or SM3) formed in 1992 in Williamsbrug, Virginia. Led by fellow high-school singer/guitarist Jason Ross and guitarist Jason Pollock, the band released their first independent album, Churn (1994), before enjoying success with their re-recorded version, American Standard (1995). The track "Cumbersome", which had been a minor radio hit, became Seven Mary Three's signature hit, reaching #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on Mainstream Rock. The following single "Water's Edge" benefited from its national exposure, while the album climbed to #24 on the Billboard 200 and received two platinum discs, one American and one Canadian. Without achieving the same degree of popularity, Seven Mary Three continued in this post-grunge vein with the albums RockCrown (1997), Orange Ave. (1998), The Economy of Sound (2001), Dis/Location (2004) and Day & Nightdriving (2008), before breaking up in 2012. In 2021, the band reformed, and in 2023 delivered a new version of "Settle Up" for the reissue of Dis/Location.
