Born in Nigeria and residing in Chicago, Godly the Ruler is influenced by artists like Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Hurt Everybody, and Mick Jenkins, their first releases focused on R&B and barebones hip hop. Equally inspired by midwestern emo as Jean Dawson, Paris Texas and Junior Varsity, all part of a new generation of artists who flip genre on its head, there’s something both raw and tactile about the shapeshifting sonic palette shows Godly at a crossroads of reinvention: as both a musician and with themself.
