Biography

Formed in Mumbai, India in 2010, Sanam is a pop-rock band who combine original material with covers of classic Bollywood hits. The roots of the band date back to 2003 when guitarists Samar Puri and Venky S started playing together while still in school. They brought in Samar’s younger brother Sanam to sing for the group, eventually moving to Delhi and becoming part of the college rock scene. After several incarnations of the band, Sanam and Samar joined forces again with Venky S and drummer Keshav Dhanraj and formed the group Sanam with Samar handling the songwriting duties and Sanam as lead vocalist. They released their debut album, Supastars, in 2010 and was followed a year later by the album, Samar Sanam. In 2013, Sanam Puri made his debut as a playback singer with the songs “Dhat Teri Ki” (from the film Gori Tere Pyaar Mein) and “Lucky Tonight” (from Ishk Actually). The group Sanam then performed the song “Main Hoon” that was featured in the Hindi-language version of 2014 movie The Amazing Spider-Man 2. To capitalize on Sanam Puri and the band’s successes, they released the compilation albums Sanam Revisited (2015) and In Love with Sanam (2017), both of which featured the band’s most popular tracks including “Yeh Raatein Yeh Mausam” and “Apki Nazron ne Samjha.” The group returned to action in 2018 with the album Sanam Revolution, which was followed by a string of singles. Sanam Puri also continued with his career as a playback singer, providing vocals for films such as Student of the Year 2 (2019).
