The Icicle Works formed in Liverpool in 1980, comprising singer‑guitarist/keyboardist Ian McNabb, bassist Chris Layhe, and drummer Chris Sharrock. The trio began writing after McNabb spotted Layhe’s advertisement for a musical collaborator, and they added Sharrock, who had previously played for the Cherry Boys. Their early releases included the 1981 cassette Ascending and the 1982 independent single "Nirvana", which reached number 15 on the UK Indie Chart. In 1983 the band signed to Beggars Banquet’s Situation Two and issued "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)", a single that entered the Top 40 in both the US and the UK in 1984. Their self‑titled debut The Icicle Works (1984) peaked at number 24 on the UK Albums Chart and produced the Top 15 hit "Love Is a Wonderful Colour". Subsequent albums-The Small Price of a Bicycle (1985), If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song (1987), Blind (1988), and Permanent Damage (1990)-were released between 1985 and 1990, with singles such as "Understanding Jane" and "High Time" charting modestly. After internal tensions and the departure of Sharrock and Layhe in 1988, the band disbanded in 1991; McNabb continued performing under the band name with various line‑ups. In 2024 Layhe rejoined, and the duo performed acoustic tours, while McNabb’s later projects included a 2025 North American tour with drummer Mark Brzezicki and keyboardist Jack Hymers.
