Biography

Matthew Garrett Champion, born on February 14, 1995, in The Woodlands, Texas, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter best known as a former member of the hip-hop boy band Brockhampton. With a heritage that includes partial Japanese American ancestry, his journey into music began in his hometown, where he attended The Woodlands High School. It was during these formative years that he started rapping and eventually met key figures like Kevin Abstract, Ameer Vann, Merlyn Wood, and Russell "Joba" Boring, who would later become his bandmates. Matt Champion's music career took a significant leap in 2014 when he joined Brockhampton, a group that emerged from the reorganization of a previous group named AliveSinceForever. His move to San Marcos, and later to Los Angeles with the group, marked the beginning of an era of prolific music production. He made notable appearances on Brockhampton's mixtape All-American Trash (2016) and their debut album Saturation (2017), which set the stage for their rise to fame. The group's success continued with the release of Saturation II and Saturation III later that year. Amidst challenges, including the departure of Ameer Vann from the group, Brockhampton signed with RCA Records and released Iridescence (2018), achieving their first number 1 debut on the Billboard charts. Ginger (2019) soon followed, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard 200. However, in 2022, Brockhampton announced an indefinite hiatus during their Here Right Now tour, eventually releasing their final albums, The Family and TM, with Champion playing a pivotal role in their production. Embarking on a solo career, he released his first single "Aphid" in 2024, featuring singer Dijon. This was followed by "Slug" and "Slow Motion," a collaborative track with South Korean singer Jennie. Matt Champion's debut solo album, Mika's Laundry, hit the shelves in March 2024.
