Crafting atmospheric soundscapes of industrial 2-step, Burial was quickly recognised as one of the UK's most innovative new producers. His eponymous debut album was named Album Of The Year by Wire magazine and, with its trippy sub-bass style, the dark, melancholy, Burial (2006) was seen as a landmark recording in the burgeoning dub-step scene. When its follow-up Untrue (2007) was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize the press suddenly went into a frenzy, demanding to know the identity of this reclusive young DJ. He was eventually revealed as William Emmanuel Bevan (born in London on August 13, 1979), a graduate of Putney's Elliot School and schoolmate of Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) but he has still managed to maintain virtually anonymous. Despite not winning the award, the album was widely acclaimed as one of the records of the year and helped define a signature sound of rapid-fire rhythms and doom-laden, nocturnal atmospherics. Burial has gone on to remix Massive Attack's album Heligoland and regularly offers remixes and unreleased tracks to Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs' Experimental Show. Years after his landmark albums, Burial continued to record for the Hyperdub label, including the EPs Street Halo (2011), Kindred (2012), Truant/Rough Sleeper (2012), and Rival Dealer (2013). Several other releases followed in the late 2010s and the 2020s, such as Subtemple in 2017, Shock Power of Love with Blackdown in 2021, Antidawn and Streetlands in 2022, or the singles "Unknown Summer" and "Dreamfear" in 2023. In 2024, Burial collaborated with Kode9 for "Phoneglow/Eyes Go Blank".
