Longtime leaders of the Rock en Español movement, Café Tacvba formed in 1989 in Ciudad Satélite, Mexico. Frontman Rubén Albarran and guitarist José Rangel first met in 1985, while both were studying graphic design at a university in Mexico City. Joined by bassist Enrique Rangel and keyboardist Emmanuel del Real Díaz, they christened themselves Café Tacvba and playing shows around the city, where they were discovered by producer Gustavo Santaolalla and signed to Warner Music Latina. The band's self-titled debut album was produced by Santaolalla and released in 1992, featuring a diverse, genre-jumping rock sound that stood in contrast to the soft sonics of Latin pop music. Extremely popular in Mexico, the album spawned six hit singles and was followed by 1994's critically-adored Re. Avalancha de Éxitos followed in 1996, featuring covers of various Spanish-speaking artists, while the double-album Revés/Yo Soy became the band's first Grammy-winning release in 1999. Four years later, Cuatro Caminos earned Café Tacvba another Grammy Award. 2007's Sino won a pair of Latin Grammys, followed in 2012 by the gold-certified, chart-topping El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco. The band then embraced its artistic independence with 2017's Jei Beibi, which debuted at Number 13 on Billboard's Latin Pop chart and later won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
