Biography

Alternative rock supergroup Angles & Airwaves was formed in 2005 by guitarist / vocalist Tom DeLonge while on hiatus from his main band, pop punk trio Blink-182. Angels & Airwaves' original line-up also included guitarist David Kennedy (Box Car Racer / Hazen Street), drummer Atom Willard (Rocket from the Crypt / the Offspring), and bassist Ryan Sinn (the Distillers). Angels & Airwaves' music was more layered and atmospheric than Blink-182, adding more artistic flair and moving away from the simplistic musical structure of the trio. The group rush-released their debut single, “The Adventure” in May 2006, after Tom DeLonge's computer was hacked and audio files were leaked onto the internet. The debut album, We Don't Need to Whisper, was released on Geffen Records a few days later and climbed to Number 4 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. At this point, the group's line-up began to change, and several members would pass through the band's ranks over the next decade. Angels & Airwaves' second album, I-Empire (2007), reached Number 9 on the Billboard 200, but they ended up leaving Geffen Records shortly afterwards. Tom Delonge reunited with Blink-182 in 2009, postponing the release of the next Angels & Airwaves album. Love was finally released in February 2010 and issued as a free digital download. Their next album, Love: Part Two (2011), entered the Top 30, followed three years later by The Dream Walker(2014). After spending five years balancing Angels & Airwaves with his Blink-182 responsibilities, Tom DeLonge quit the pop-punk trio and devoted all of his time to Angles & Airwaves. Over the next few years, he promised the release of several projects, although the group's next album, Lifeforms , did not appear until September 2021.
