Biography

Babymetal are a Japanese pop group formed in Tokyo in 2010 featuring singers Suzuka Nakamoto (known as Su-metal), Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) and Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal), who departed in 2018. Created as a subset of J-pop band Sakura Gakuin by producer Key Kobayashi (known as Kobametal), they performed and recorded with the backup band Kiba of Akiba and then Babybones before settling on the Kami Band as regulars. With an average age of 12, they released singles and videos and performed in 2012 at the Summer Sonic Festival in Japan and Anime Festival Asia in Singapore.

Their 2014 debut release 'Babymetal' topped Billboard's World Albums chart, went to number two on Billboard's Japan albums chart, number four on Japan's Oricon albums chart, number 12 on Billboard's Hard Rock Albums chart, number 32 on the Independent Albums chart, number 50 on the Top Rock Albums chart and 187 on the Billboard 200. 'Metal Resistance' (2016) topped the World Albums chart, reached number two on Japan's Oricon albums chart, Billboard's Japan albums chart and the Hard Rock Albums chart, number four on Billboard's Independent Albums chart, number six on the Top Rock Albums chart and number 15 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.

They have toured internationally supporting Lady Gaga, Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, appeared at major concerts around the world and headlined at venues such as Wembley in London. Their 2018 world tour took them across North America and Asia. They have released two concert albums, 'Live at Budokan: Red Night' (2015) and 'Live at Wembley' (2016). The single 'Elevator Girl' came out in 2019 ahead of an announced third album. Their 2019 schedule was to include an appearance at the O2 Academy Brixton in England plus performances at venues in Japan, Taiwan and America.
