Biography

Actress and rapper Shawntae Harris, aka Da Brat, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She released her first album in 1994 at the age of 20, under the title 'Funkdafied'. Selling more than one million copies of the album, she became the first solo female rapper to achieve a platinum record.

After winning a local rap competition when she was 18, Dr Brat got to meet duo Kris Kross as part of her prize. Through them she met producer Jermaine Dupri who saw her potential and signed her to his label. On releasing 'Funkdafied', she made a name for herself charting at number eleven in the Rap Albums Chart. The single of the same name made it to number one on the Rap Singles Chart and number six on the Hot 100.

Her second album, 'Anuthatantrum', was released in 1996. She spent the next four years focusing on collaborations with Kris Kross, Mariah Carey, Lil' Kim, Left Eye and Missy Elliott. She also turned her hand to acting, with an appearance in 'Kazaam' in 1996. Returning to the studio to work on solo material, she put out her third album, 'Unrestricted', in 2000. 'Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz' followed in 2003 before she featured on the Dem Franchize Boyz track 'I Think They Like Me'. After spending time in prison for assault, Da Brat revealed web series 'Brat Chronicles: In Transition' followed by brand new single 'Is It Chu?'. She is a regular guest on 'The Rap Game' where she mentors aspiring rappers.
