TBN009, My Favourite Mystery and Thriller Novels of 2021
In this episode of the Book Nerd Podcast, I'm going to discuss my favourite mystery and thriller novels that I read in 2021. I what you're thinking, "it's been a while since the end of 2021," but hear me out. I wanted to put a bit of distance between the end of 2021 and my reading because I wanted to discuss the books that stood out to me the most. From memory, I read close to fifty books in 2021. Actually, I've checked and it was 49 books read.So without further ado, let's get on with the episode.Show Notes, Podcasts, and Tools MentionedShow Notes Join The Book Nerd Reader Club Facebook GroupGot an idea for a podcast episode? TBN008, Agatha Raisin: Books vs TV Series
As you can tell from the title of this episode, I'm going to discuss the Agatha Raisin television show on Acorn TV versus the books in order to avoid spoilers, I'm going to focus on how Agatha is portrayed, not the events in the show and novels. Fingers crossed, I stick to my notes and this show remains as spoiler-free as possible. You get it. I've tried to not ruin things for you, but just be aware I could slip up and start talking plot before we get started.I should also point out that I've watched season one and two, but not three because I couldn't purchase it on Amazon prime video--it's only available on the Acorn TV streaming service. Actually, this isn't true anymore. I've caught up since I wrote this script and I'm rewatching season one, but currently, seasons one to four are available. We have finished watching season four and Amazon Prime Video recommended the Quiche of Death, again, which is the pilot episode--it's not officially a part of season one. And I thought, "Ooh, maybe I wanna watch that." Then, I got trapped into watching season one again--the things you do as a podcaster. But I'm glad I did this because it refreshed my memory and it reaffirmed the things that I've said in the script that I still hold to be true. On top of this, I'm also hoping to keep this as a short episode. So without further ado, let's get into the episodeShow Notes, Podcasts, and Tools MentionedShow NotesAgatha Raisin TV Series on Acorn TVAgatha Raisin TV Series 1 on Amazon Prime Video *Join The Book Nerd Reader Club Facebook GroupGot an idea for a podcast episode? TBN007, A Giant Female Amateur Sleuths Book Haul
Just like the previous episode, I've been saving the books up in piles on the floor in my office from shopping trips between October 2019 and March 2020, when my physical book buying ban began. Since then, I've fallen off the bandwagon and "forgot" about my book buying ban. As the title suggests, all the books in this haul feature female amateur sleuths who are amateurs and are not professional Detectives or police officers. For the sake of clarity, I do not include characters like Eve Dallas from the In Death Series. And, I've managed to stop myself from reading these books before I haul them for you.Show Notes, Podcasts, and Tools MentionedShow Notes Cluedo for Nintendo Switch  Join The Book Nerd Reader Club Facebook GroupGot an idea for a podcast episode? TBN006, The Book Buying Tag | How I Buy Books
As you can tell by the super spoiler-y title of this video, I'll be doing the Book Buying Tag created by Megan Olivier. Even though this is quite an old tag, I loved it so much that I clearly couldn't resist filming it. After much deliberation, I've decided to share this tag with you over on the podcast. For the sake of transparency, I filmed the original video in April of 2020. In light of that, I do make a reference to the lockdown. I've tried to delete as much of this as possible so that you don't find it triggering. Here are the questions:Where do you buy your books?Do you ever pre-orders book and if so, do you do this in-store or online? On average, how many books do you buy a month?Do you use your local library? If so, how my books can you or do you borrow at a time? What is your opinion on library books? How do you feel about charity shop or second-hand books?Do you keep your read and TBR pile together on the same bookshelf or not?Do you plan to read all of the books that you own? What do you do with books you own that you feel you will never read or did not enjoy?Have you ever donated books?Have you ever been on a book buying ban?Do you feel that you buy too many books? Thanks for listening!Show Notes, Podcasts, Books, and Tools MentionedShow NotesPrevious Episode Lucy Worsley's Book RoomJoin The Book Nerd Reader Club Facebook Group Got an idea for a podcast episode? TBN005, A Giant Crime, Mystery, and Thriller Book Haul
Coming up in this episode, I will share with you an embarrassingly long and overdue crime, mystery and thriller book haul. Perhaps on a not so surprising note, I have read some of these novels. As always, I will endeavour to be as spoiler-free as possible. The crime, mystery, and thriller books in this haul were purchased over the last six months of 2019. Yes, some of these books have been sitting in a pile on the floor in my office for eighteen months. What can I say? I'm a chronic procrastinator.Way back in March, I planned on releasing this episode but my husband started working from home and I struggled to figure out how to continue to work with my new workspace colleague, so this podcast went on a hiatus. Well, I thought it would be a short hiatus, but it didn't work out like that much like many other things in 2020. But, back to the books. As per my previous book hauls, I separated the novels according to the genre.Book GiveawayGood News: The giveaway for Romanov Ransom by Clive Cussler and Robin Burcell is still open partly because I forgot to include the details of entry on the show notes, and I only realised quite recently. TBN004, 13 Crime, Mystery, Suspense and Thriller Novels Featuring Characters who are Journalists
As you can guess by the spoiler-y title I’m going to discuss 13 crime, mystery, thriller and Suspense novels featuring characters who are journalists. I’ve decided to divide this episode up into two parts, the first is "books I want to read" and the second is "books i’ve read.” My love of characters who are journalists stems from two places. The first is my love of the superman story. And, the second which is directly related to the first is, my love of the hit 90’s TV show, Lois and Clark.  I’m not going to lie, 14 year old me had a huge crush on Dean Cain. Not Dean Cain as Superman but Dean Cain as Clark Kent. What can I say? I love me a nerd. But, I also loved Lois—I could relate to her. She was stubborn, ambitious, and was obsessed with her work. Fourteen year old Amelia wanted to be Lois Lane when she grew up. Honestly, there’s a part of me that still does.     My Personal Tastes in Books This episode originally had sixteen books, but as I was curating this list, I realised that two of the books contained plots centred around the deaths of toddlers or young children. My family has been through the tragedy of loosing an older baby to SIDS when I was five years old. As I’ve grown up, got married, and considered having my own children, I’ve discovered that this event has had a profound affect on me. So, I removed the books from my to be read list, because I will probably find them quite triggering. In general, I tend to stop reading books that feature the investigations of crimes against children and minors under the age of eighteen. I did start reading a book that opened with the aftermath of the death of a young teenage girl and I go the hint that the crime had a sexual element, I immediately closed the book and I have no intention of picking it back up. And, there are certain curse words or racial slang that I can’t handle, so I deleted another book for that reason as well, as other reasons. I’m not saying those three book were bad, they were just not for me. Also, it’s worth pointing out that those books had a significant number of good reviews. So, without further ado, let’s get into my list of books I want to read.     Books I Want to Read See Her Run by Peggy Townsend The Dying Hour by Rick Mofina The Poet by Michael Connelly False truth (Jordan Fox Mystery Series) by Diane Capri and Beth Dexter The Secret Patient by Vaughan W. Smith   Books I’ve Read Absolute Truth by Peter JamesAnonymous Source by A. C. FullerDon’t Tell Meg by Paul J. TeagueFatal Enemy (The Jess Kimball Thrillers Series, Book 1) by Diane CapriDead Shot (A Cal Murphy Thriller Book 1) by R J PattersonLast Girl Gone by J. G. TBN003, What's On My Kindle App
As suggested by the title, I’m going to dive into the depths of my Kindle app and share with you the mystery and thriller novels that are lurking and waiting to be read by me. Don’t worry; I’ve managed to narrow this list down to twelve books. While I’m talking about my Kindle app, I will also get a bit nerdy and discuss my organisational habits with you. I also plan to do an episode focused on what’s in my audible library, but I won’t share that next. Why? Because, I realise that there will be several shows in a row focused on my reading habits and I want to start talking about books, because this podcast is supposed to be a virtual book club. But first, I want to discuss my reading goal for 2020. Concluding Thoughts After, you’ve listened to the episode, I have a few questions for you. Do you like to read on a kindle device or kindle app? If so, what’s on it? And, how do you organise your kindle? While, I’m asking lots of questions do you have a reading goal for 2020? Let me know by sharing your thoughts in the comments section on the blog post. Or, if you’re this way inclined, I’ve just set up a Facebook Group for this podcast, so come on over and join in on the discussion after the show. The Facebook group is called The Book Nerd Reader Club. I started it because I thought it would be easier to create discussion on Facebook than under a blog post. For the sake of transparency, the facebook group is so new that it’s just me in the group at the moment. I know it super embarrassing but I’m all alone. For some reason, I think of Home alone when I say that. Thank you for listening and happy reading, everybody. TBN002, What’s On My TBR List
Here are all the books I plan on reading. Since I first uploaded my very first book haul, I've been considering whether I should share a video once a month talking about what's on my TBR list; but, I've shied away from this idea because I can't seem to stick to a reading schedule. I always seem to find another book that promises a more exciting read than what I had planned.   Now that I'm eight books behind in my annual reading goal, I've decided to bite the bullet and attempt to stick to my TBR plans.   So, without further ado, let's get into discussing what I plan to read.   Thanks for listening! TBN001, I Have a Confession to Make
As you can probably tell by the super spoiler-y title of this video, I’m a writer and I’m in a reading slump. I find this super embarrassing because, at the moment, all I’m doing is writing, editing, and preparing my books for publication. At the beginning of 2019, I set a reading goal to reach 40 books by the end of the year. My reasoning behind that was to read more books every year. As the years have gone on, I’ve achieved this goal.   So, how do you get out of a reading slump?   Before I answer that question, first lets take a look at the hole I’ve dug for myself.   Thanks for listening!   Show Notes, Podcasts, Books, and Tools Mentioned Show Notes | I Have an Embarrassing Confession to Make!Next Episode | TBN003, What's on My TBR ListJoin The Book Nerd Reader Club Facebook GroupGot an idea for a podcast episode? Welcome to The Book Nerd Podcast
I’ve never been the type of reader who will solely read a single genre of fiction. I’m a little eclectic when it comes to reading. How bad am I?Basically, if the cover pulls me into the story, then I’ll read it. I guess you can say I’m a bibliophile. And that’s why I created this podcast. For those of you who are just like me who are bibliophile’s that will read anything that’s page-turning. What is The Book Nerd Podcast? The Book Nerd is a virtual book club that comes out every second Sunday. Each episode will be a maximum of 20 minutes Long. I wanted to make each show short and be respectful of your time because I get it, you're busy and may not have a spare hour to listen to a podcast or watch a video. It's a relaunch of one of my older podcast, Thriller Novel Nerd that pod-faded at the beginning of 2020, after episode six. To be honest, I felt constrained by the name of the podcast, and the lockdown happened. Since then, I've had a rethink about what I want to achieve, and I figured out how to work from home with my husband, manage my writing and podcasting. So, what's different about this version of the podcast? The main difference between the Book Nerd and Thriller Novel Nerd is I've ditched the video episodes, along with recording stereo. These changes should fix the sound issues. And, I'm now recording in seasons. Each season of the podcast will have thirteen episodes scheduled to go live every two weeks. Figures crossed this will help me to achieve a better writing and podcasting balance.   Who will enjoy this podcast? As suggested by the title, this podcast is for writers and readers who are passionate about the Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense genres. If you love discussing what makes a good thriller novel or are just looking for your next read, then this podcast is for you.   Concluding Thoughts If you love novels within the mystery, thriller, and suspense genres and if this sounds like the podcast for you, then click the subscribe button and listen to the next episode. And, make sure you connect with me on social media.   Thanks for listening.
