Interview w/ Maryland Cannabis Dispensary Owners
There’s a unique market in Maryland with only approximately 17 cultivators/growers. The retail outlets are selling a lot of the same products. This leads to price compression happening more quickly than non-limited license markets. “We see our ‘Nordstroms’—'store-within-a-store’ model as a way to counteract this phenomenon,” said Remedy Co-Founder, Mitch Trellis.Episode 1074 The #TalkingHedge talks with Mitch Trellis & Brandon Barksdale, Co-founders at REMEDY at #MJbizCon...https://youtu.be/eE8TsiG10fw

Washington Considers Cannabis Delivery
So what happened? The state Liquor and Cannabis Board conducted a study on how to set up and operate a delivery system with an eye to ensuring cannabis doesn’t wind up in the wrong hands.SignificanceEver since Washington voters legalized cannabis in 2012, people have been asking for home delivery, yet home delivery brings a new set of challenges. The Department of Health said the agency does not oppose a delivery system but “are concerned about diversion.”  Among issues the study must consider are how to verify authorization databases and what payment methods would be allowed.  With many transactions conducted with cash, the study must look at how to ensure “safe and secure” transporting of products, including delivery vehicle requirements, and how deliveries by retailers operating out of Indian reservations will be handled.  ImpactThe state of Washington was one of the first to legalize cannabis for adult consumers – but they are still working on legislation that will hopefully improve the industry.  Concerns mount with limited access in rural regions with bans or moratoriums already in place.  There also are patients who may live near a store but because of their mobility challenges cannot easily get there.About Weed Talk News:Weed Talk News is a weekly Cannabis news roundup published every Friday delivering the most current cannabis events with high visibility news contributors, including state by state cannabis news updates as well as Federal marijuana news! The #TalkingHedge…https://youtu.be/VHoGTC7hNds

Washington Considers Allowing Cannabis Growers to Have Direct-to-Customers Sales
So what happened?Washington will consider allowing small cannabis farmers to sell directly to consumers, similar to what’s allowed for wineries, breweries and distilleries.Washington also would be following the lead of a few Canadian provinces that allow licensed producers to sell cannabis to consumers at cultivation facilities. As a reminder, Washington is not vertically integrated, meaning growers & manufacturers can not also be retailers.SignificanceGiven the imbalance between cannabis producer licenses and cannabis retail licenses in Washington state, prices have plummeted and small farmers are struggling to find a way to get their products in front of customers. Ongoing discussions over how to solve this problem have coalesced into a new possibility of allowing direct sales at cultivation sites.ImpactCannabis farmers markets were common during Washington state’s medical-only days, before adult-use regulation and other changes pushed patients and customers into state-licensed stores. The move, if approved by regulators, would give smaller growers a financial boost through increased sales – and could spur other states to follow suit.About Weed Talk News:Weed Talk News is a weekly Cannabis news roundup published every Friday delivering the most current cannabis events with high visibility news contributors, including state by state cannabis news updates as well as Federal marijuana news! The #TalkingHedge…https://youtu.be/o6wwOmL4GgE

Next 6 States to Legalize Cannabis
Come November, six states hope to join 19 others plus Washington, D.C., and Guam in legalizing recreational use of marijuana.  Although it remains illegal at the federal level, recent years have seen a growing number of states seeking to legalize cannabis. Several of the provisions up for vote in November could expunge the records of those convicted of cannabis possession. Episode 1047 The #TalkingHedge...https://youtu.be/n2gDrq8Cmtk

Cannabis Topicals Data & Trends
Although Topicals make up a very small percentage of total cannabis sales, their association with wellness products drives unique industry trends compared to larger product categories.Topicals make up less than 1% of total cannabis sales in both the US and Canada, and popularity is slowly decreasing in both countries. Yet topicals are unlike other cannabis product in that consumers rely on these products for pain relief and relaxation. When we look at segments within the Topical category, we find that consumers in the US overwhelmingly prefer Lotion, Salves, Gels, and Creams while Canada sees more diversity in segment sales. To help you better understand what’s driving demand for Topicals today, this report drills into category insights, explores market share, changes in pricing, various segments, and demographic groups for both US and Canadian markets.Episode 1044 The #TalkingHedge dives into Headset’s data…#cannabisindustry #CannabisData #CannabisAnalytics #CannabisSalesData https://youtu.be/9tI7KhEXr6w

Deep Dive into Massachusetts' Cannabis Sales Data
Totaling over $1 billion in cannabis sales so far this year, the Massachusetts cannabis market is growing larger than more legacy markets in the US such as Washington and Oregon. This highly competitive market, with over 420 retail licenses issued so far and more pending, offers an additional challenge to retailers and brands: vertical integration. Massachusetts is by far one of the most vertically integrated markets in the US, which translates into a high level of brand consolidation in the market. The Massachusetts cannabis market has many trends that set this market apart from others in the US. For example, in recent months, many markets have been experiencing declining growth rates as a result of a post-pandemic market correction. In Massachusetts however, sales totaled $132M in July 2022, a 4% increase from July 2021. The Massachusetts cannabis market is also highly vertically integrated compared to other US markets. Because of this, Massachusetts has the most brand consolidation among other cannabis markets, with more than 2/3 of total sales coming from the top 10 brands. While the consumer landscape in Massachusetts is fairly similar to the rest of the US, there is a slightly higher proportion of Generation X consumers and younger Female consumers participating in the Massachusetts cannabis market compared to other markets in the US.In this report we take a close look at the Massachusetts cannabis market, exploring cannabis sales growth, product categories, brand consolidation in the market, demographics, and more.Episode 1043 The #TalkingHedge looks at Headset’s data with Jimmy Young of Pro Cannabis Media…#CannabisIndustry #CannabisData #CannabisAnalytics #CannabisSalesDatahttps://youtu.be/WYRIjVVpPVc

October Cannabis Market Overview ($17B in 15 markets YTD!?!)
Washington State has 1794 SKUs, but just shy of $106 million in cannabis sales during the month of October. What’s the Significance?:Washington sold 1/4 the amount California sold, but it has 1/20th the population. What Happened in Washington last month?:Total Sales= $105.9MYOY Sales Growth= -10.1% (recent highs were in June 2020 at 30%)Avg Basket= $31.70SKUs= 1794Like-Store-Sales-Growth (LSSG)= -1.51%Inflationary Pressures:Decreased average basket size trend continues, while the number of transactions continues to increase- indicating consumers are still going to #potshops more often, but spending less per transaction. This could mean consumers are trying to avoid higher minimum delivery requirements and opting to go to dispensaries and buying only what they need instead.Consolidation:Brand concentration has remained relatively steady, however, it's anticipated that consolidation will pick up as Canadian companies and private equity and venture capitalists come into the space in anticipation of U.S. Federal legalization to snap up under-valued cannabis prospects in hopes of a legalization rally that'll spark the next wave of cannabis stock speculation.Episode 1040 The #TalkingHedge looks at Headset’s data…#CannabisIndustry #CannabisData #MarijuanaData #CannabisAnalytics #MarijuanaAnalytics #CannabisSalesDatahttps://youtu.be/rEe8kLqOxRs

BIG Candy Lawsuits Coming
Candy maker Mars Canada Inc. won a lawsuit against cannabis manufacturers who sold edibles online under the guise of Skittles. In a Canadian federal court ruling, three cannabis retailers were ordered to pay Mars a total of $144,600 after they were found infringing the candy maker’s trademarks by marketing and selling THC-infused edibles in Canada with logo and packaging “almost identical” to official Skittles products.“I also find that advertising and offering for sale of a potentially dangerous product using appropriated trademarks that are evidently and obviously attractive to children represents a marked departure from ordinary standards of decent behavior that deserves to be denounced and deterred.”“I agree with the Plaintiff and find the Defendants’ efforts to remain anonymous support the conclusion that they had knowledge of the unlawful nature of their activity.”Mars issued a press release announcing it would launch legal action against cannabis retailers who use its trademarks to market and sell THC-infused edibles. Episode 1036 The #TalkingHedge with Katrina Glogowski, Seattle Attorney & Angel Investor...https://youtu.be/43v_ApKr_uM

Budtender Turnover Analysis
A lot has changed in recent years in the cannabis industry. One thing that remains the same is the importance of cannabis retail sales employees. Also known as ‘budtenders’, these employees still remain as the primary ambassadors of cannabis and the most critical sales conduit for the vast majority of retail sales transactions. The purchase decisions that cannabis customers make are heavily influenced by the employee they interact with, which makes these staff members the heart and soul of the industry.Turnover is often unavoidable and always costly, so it’s essential to optimize the employee hiring and managing process wherever possible. In both countries nearly a quarter of all budtenders hired in the past year did not complete a full month of work. It does seem, however, that the budtenders with the best performance are the ones that continue working. In this report, we explore budtender turnover in the US and Canada to get an understanding of what is and isn’t normal when it comes to budtender turnover.Episode 1028 The #TalkingHedge dives into Headset’s report…#CannabisIndustry #CannabisData #MarijuanaData #CannabisAnalytics #MarijuanaAnalytics #CannabisSalesData #MarijuanaSalesDatahttps://youtu.be/DNqhIuCYT8w
