Listen Now: Suspect "Five Shots in the Dark"
Leon Benson spent more than half of his life, a total of 24 years, in an Indiana state prison for a murder he didn't commit. Despite the lack of physical evidence and a questionable eyewitness identification, he was convicted. But new realities start to come to light when attorney Lara Bazelon takes up his case and is determined to secure Benson's release. Season three of Suspect, co-produced by Campside Media and Wondery, delves into the flaws in the criminal justice system that led to Benson's wrongful conviction for the 1998 shooting of Kasey Schoen in Indianapolis. The investigation aims to uncover the truth about who really committed the crime and why the eyewitness testimony that led to Benson's conviction was so shaky. Host Matthew Shaer joins co-producer and writer Bazelon to take a deep dive into the nature of memory and how it can be fallible and result in an innocent man's life being wasted, while the real perpetrator remains unpunished. As the investigation unfolds, will Bazelon and her team gather enough evidence to free Benson? And what will happen to Schoen’s real killer? It was a tight night community where everyone knew everyone and the residents of the town slept with their windows open allowing the cool breeze from the Puget sound to wash over them as they slept.  But on Valentine’s Day 1975 the coastal community would be shaken to its core when a teenage girl is murdered just feet from the safety of her house. Introducing COLD: The Search for Sheree
Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no one could say how it got there. When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who lived a sinister double life. Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for investigators. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. This season, host Dave Cawley, digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case and examines the intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren? Hey Prime Members, you can binge all 10 episodes of COLD: The Search for Sheree ad-free on Amazon Music. Wondery Presents Suspect Season 2: Vanished In The Snow
For more than three and a half decades, the disappearance of 12-year-old  Jonelle Matthews was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had scoured every inch of prairie. Jonelle’s face had been on milk cartons nationwide. Even the President of the United States had appealed to the public for help. Still, every lead had fizzled. Every person of interest had turned out to be a dead end.  Then, in 2019, Jonelle’s remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With the discovery came a troubling new question: Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time? Was the man who couldn’t stop obsessing over Jonelle’s disappearance also the person who took her? From Campside Media and Wondery comes season two of SUSPECT. Former CNN reporter Ashley Fantz and executive producers Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Suspect, Over My Dead Body) dig into one of the most mind-bending cold cases in modern history, in an attempt to separate fact and fiction, compulsion from guilt, and true-crime fandom from a motive for murder. Episode 138: Shauna Howe | The Town That Dreaded Sundown
The story I have for you today will be, just as they always are, hard to get through, especially because it involves a child. Just around Halloween in 1992 a vicious crime would shock the blue collar town of Oil City, PA, changing it forever. In fact, the town would put a ban on night time trick or treating for 16 years after the case I am about to tell you, and even now the time is restricted to not go past 8 PM. Halloween is a time of great excitement for children. It is electric in the air, kids playing innocent pranks, mischief nights, talking about what they are going to dress up as, and of course, the promise of mounds and mounds of candy after trick or treating. But lurking beneath all that fun is a terrifying truth, something the good people of Oil City had to learn the hard way,  that monsters are real,  and sometimes they are the ones you least expect.
