Town Business: An Evening of Cultural Power
Welcome to Town Business: An Evening of Cultural Power. We love live events, especially when they're in our own backyard among our friends! This was the kickoff event to celebrate Oakland's Mayor Sheng Thao's bold initiative to center film and television production as a cornerstone of economic development. And all we can say is, it's about damn time! The space was energized, the drinks and tacos were flowing, and we were lucky enough to chat with some of Oakland's finest. You'll hear from artist/organizer/co-founder and president of the Center for Cultural Power/one of the evening's panelists, Favianna Rodriguez, Chuck Johnson of Soul Beat, filmmaker Niema Jordan, entertainment lawyer/producer George Rush, and grammy winning musician/culture maker Tommy Shepherd. They share their thoughts on Oakland's cultural roots in activism and the arts, what makes storytellers from the Bay unique, how tv and film can revitalize the city, locations in Oakland they'd like to see on the big screen, and their roles in making sure this exciting initiative is successful.Follow Favianna Rodriguez on IGFollow Chuck Johnson on IGFollow Niema Jordan on IGFollow Tommy Shepherd on IGBitch Talk Podcast recorded this episode live from Mama Dog Studios in Oakland special audio support provided by Kayla AnchellKQED article about Soul Beat from 2020--Thanks for listening and for your support! Reality Winner Director Sonia Kennebeck
Reality Winner is an incredible documentary about one of the youngest whistleblowers in US history, and now she's finally able to tell her own story. At the age of 25, Reality Winner was sentenced to 63 months in prison, the longest ever imposed in federal court for an unauthorized release of government information to the media. And after following her story for 5 years, director Sonia Kennebeck has revised her original documentary (United States vs. Reality Winner) to include exclusive footage of Reality's release from prison (on June 2nd, 2021) and her first official interview. Sonia shares her feelings during that first initial interview, the complications of being an investigative journalist in the age of misinformation, and why Reality calls her film a "living documentary".Reality Winner starts streaming on demand on October 31st. Basic Bitching with NPR's Aisha Harris
This week we sit down over drinks at Oakland's Room 389 with NPR's Aisha Harris! We find out how she became a film and pop culture critic (after a brief stint in a Broadway musical with Sally Struthers!), how she became one of the hosts of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, and obviously get into all things pop culture. But we also talk about why we love her new book, Wannabe: Reckonings With The Pop Culture That Shapes Me, and the unfortunate (but hilarious) issue she had while recording the audiobook. She shares her thoughts on everything from Will and Jada, to post film Q and A's, the Sex and the City reboot, and her very specific definition of a Zaddy. Cat Person Director Susanna Fogel
Cat Person is a film about a college student going on a date with an older man that evolves into all of the potential horrors of modern dating. It's based on a viral short story from the New Yorker in 2017, and six years later, it's as relevant as ever. We got to chat with director Susanna Fogel about the grey area of dating that most of us can relate to, how she was able to direct one of the more uncomfortable sex scenes we've ever seen, and her secret trick to cast bonding. And then she caps off our conversation by reliving her own real life bad date story!Cat Person is in theaters October 6th. Basic Bitching - LIVE from Old Skool Cafe
This #BasicBitch was recorded live from one of our favorite restaurants in San Francisco, the Old Skool Cafe, a youth run jazz-themed supper club. The food is delicious, the service is wonderful, the ambiance is transporting, and the live music- you'll hear for yourself. We dive into our IMAX experience watching the newly restored Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (out in theaters now! Click here for showtimes), and the pros and cons of the 415 Club at Oracle Park. Then we share out outrage over the recent article attacking Martin Short, Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher being scabs (even though they've both backtracked as of the posting of this episode #neverforget), and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher doing too much.--Thanks for listening and for your support! Basic Bitch - US Open, Gasoline Rainbow, and Labor Day Hijinks
This #BasicBitch was recorded on location at the Mini Bar in San Francisco, and we're excited to finally share that we're in a movie! It's a brief cameo in the film Gasoline Rainbow directed by the Ross Brothers that just premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Take a listen for all the behind the scenes info on why we were asked to be in the film, where it all took place, our unique (yet familiar) experience on set, and when you can potentially watch it for yourself. Next we discuss the Hungry Ghosts art show at the Mini Bar in the Western Addition neighborhood in San Francisco (brought to you by Storied: San Francisco and running through October 9th), and our Labor Day hijinks that started at Fleetwood and ended at the Happy Lounge. We dive into which sport is making us happy and which sport is pissing us off, and cap it all off with our moments of pleasure. Enjoy!--Thanks for listening and for your support! Basic Bitch - Eat the Frites! Euro travels, New York, Outside Lands + more
Take us back to our separate trips to Europe this year. Ange talks about her month long Spring visit to Germany, Brussels, and Amsterdam while Erin talks about her recent trip to Barcelona, Puglia (Italy), and Perchtoldsdorf (Austria). Then Ange dives into her quick trip to New York (she hadn't been back since 2003 y'all) and why it was a last minute decision. We wrap it up with Erin's somewhat annual Outside Lands jaunt peppered with beignet's, bounce, and her new obsession - The Foo Fighters (specifically Dave Grohl). This recording took place at one of our favorite bars in San Francisco, Zam Zam - which has a real jukebox filled with music by Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Dr. John and so many more great musicians. Zam Zam also has one of our favorite bartenders - local artist Kundan Baidwan who first appeared on our show during our tribute Anthony Bourdain crawl back in 2018. Y'all, on a somber note, we are devastated by the climate destruction that has wreaked havoc on Maui. It's a special place for Erin and her husband, Jeff and we are shocked at the loss of life, small businesses, and generations of Hawaiian's. If you have any extra money to give, we strongly encourage you to give to Hawaii Community Foundation. Thank you.--Thanks for listening and for your support! Writer/Musician Thao Nguyen
It was months in the making but we finally got to chat with musician and writer Thao Nguyen! We saw Thao perform live IN A CHURCH earlier this year at the SXSW festival down in Austin and immediately knew we had to have her on. Thao's energy, lyrics, and musicianship is a thing to experience and we have been so energized to talk with her that this interview did not disappoint. In this chat we get Thao's origin story, why and how she landed in San Francisco in the mid 2000's, where she gets her inspiration for her song lyrics, and how we are going to start the Church of Thao. If you haven't listened to Thao's music you can head to her website here and if you want to read her writing you can sign up for her substack here.Follow Thao on IGSee Thao in person hereWatch Thao on PBS's Southern Storytellers and Southern Sounds--Thanks for listening and for your support! Randall Park - Director of Shortcomings
Randall Park is even more lovely in person than he is on screen! Ange sits down with him at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco to discuss his feature length directorial debut, Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine. The film follows three young Asian Americans living in the Bay Area as they navigate life, relationships, and (hopefully) their own personal growth.Randall shares his reaction to reading the novel in 2007, AAPI representation through the years, and the great debate that every Asian American has had about the film Crazy Rich Asians. He shares his love for some of the Bay Area musicians that are part of the film's score, and the differences between filming in NY versus Berkeley. Then we go back to his time at UCLA, majoring in Asian American Studies, and founding a comedy troop with friends who he eventually joined forces with to launch the production company, Imminent Collision. Finally, he gets into Hollywood gatekeepers, his work philosophy, and what film he loves that would piss off Ben, the cinephile main character in Shortcomings.Shortcomings opens in theaters on August 4th, get tickets here--on-site audio producer: Josh BrumleyThanks for listening and for your support! Earth Mama follows a pregnant young single mother of two who embraces her Bay Area community as she determines the fate of her family.Director Savanah Leaf sits down with us to explain how this film was born from her short film The Heart Still Hums, the meaning of the title, and how writing the screenplay was a form of therapy. Ursula shares some insight for indie filmmakers on being commissioned to direct a film, and the importance of us being able to tell our own stories. Jeanette Lee opens up about being vulnerable on camera, and how she dealt with mansplaining at the pool table. SFFilm Festival 2023 - Director Rooth Tang & Producer Michelle Moy of Rally
Welcome back to our live broadcast from the SFFilm Festival's filmmakers lounge! In this final SFFilm Fest episode, Erin sits down with director Rooth Tang and producer Michelle Moy to discuss their documentary film Rally, about San Francisco political kingmaker Rose Pak. If you're not from or live in the City, you may be asking yourself who's Rose Pak, and why should I care? Well, Rose was an interesting character - immigrant to the states, started out as a journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle, then turned herself into a political powerhouse, activist, and shit disturber. It's a complicated life but an interesting one and director Rooth Tang was a great choice to tell her story. In this live interview, Erin talks to the director and producer about Rooth's invovlement in telling Rose's story (Rooth is from Southern California), how did Rose's story unfold into a full length documentary, and what do they think Rose would think about this film if she was still alive. As San Franciscan's and AAPI Americans, we have a complicated relationship with Rose Pak, and thankfully there are films like this to shine a light on all of her work that ultimately shows how much of a fighter Rose was for Chinese Americans. SFFilm Festival 2023 - Directors Rebecca Landsbury-Baker and Joe Peeler of Bad Press
Welcome back to our live broadcast from the SFFilm Festival's filmmakers lounge! In this episode, Erin talks with the directors of the very powerful documentary Bad Press. Bad Press tells the story of when the Muscogee Nation suddenly begins censoring its free press, a rogue reporter fights to expose her government's corruption in a historic battle that will have ramifications for all of Indian country. This story was an eye opener on so many levels and Erin talked with the directors about how this story came to light, how did Joe (not of the Muscogee Nation) fit in as part of the crew, how Angel is doing (the rogue reporter who is 100% a bad Bitch!), and why the Muscogee political machine was not always wanting the camera on them while Rebecca and Joe were peeling back the onion of this documentary in real time. Bad Press is why we need documentaries. So thankful that SFFilm picked it up after seeing it at this years Sundance. If you see it roll through your local film festival, buy a ticket and bring some friends. The Return of Zoe Lister-Jones
Zoe Lister-Jones is a bad bitch. She is the writer, director, showrunner, and lead actor in her latest project SLIP now playing on The Roku Channel. We caught up with Zoe earlier this week to discuss this magically surreal, time jumping, orgasmic ride of a TV show. She enlightened us about when she started working on this script, how Buddhism influenced the story line, how important your ride or dies are in every stage of life, and maybe Captain Party puts Erin on the spot in front of Zoe with a question about life. Cool. Thanks to Zoe for hopping back on the mic with us. If you haven't heard our first interview with her, it was way back in 2017 to talk about her film Band Aid which you can find on most streaming platforms. It is a delightful film to watch and you get treated to Zoe's beautiful singing voice. Listen to that interview here. Follow Zoe Lister-Jones on IG --Thanks for listening and for your support! SXSW Festival 2023 - Mother of the Dawn
Welcome to the South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas!Holy shit, this interview is a doozy. To our regular listeners, this episode is more of a #BasicBitch than an interview, and at one point the tables were turned and Erin and Ange were the ones receiving questions. Let's just say that we had a meeting of the minds with these ladies, and this is (hopefully) the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Mother of the Dawn is a short film about a female truck driver in Brazil who started having visions of extraterrestrials in the 1950s. These visions led her to start her own community/religion of followers that has over 800,000 members, yet is still relatively unheard of. We were joined by director Janell Shirtcliff and producer Daisy O'Dell, and while our conversation definitely discusses the importance of their short film and how much they cherish this community of people and their beliefs, it also ventures off into the unknown (in the best way possible). We hope that you'll enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it!Follow director Janell Shirtcliff on IG Follow producer Daisy O'Dell on IG --Thanks for listening and for your support!
