John David Martin – AKA Moon Martin – was born on October 31, 1945 in Altus Oklahoma. The singer, songwriter, and guitarist released nine albums between 1978 and 1999 but is best known for writing Robert Palmer’s 1979 hit “Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)”, which landed in the Top 20 in several countries including Australia, France, Ireland, New Zealand, and Canada, where it reached Number 1. He also wrote one of Mink DeVille’s most beloved tracks, “Cadillac Walk”, which was released as a single and included on the album Cabretta in 1977. Moon Martin – who earned his nickname because he referenced the moon in many of his lyrics – released his debut album, Shots From A Cold Nightmare, on Capitol Records in 1978. The album features his versions of “Bad Case of Loving You” and “Cadillac Walk”. In 1979, he issued his second album, Escape from Domination, which reached Number 80 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The single “Rolene” rose as high as Number 30. Street Fever, his third album, followed in 1980, hitting Number 138 on the chart. 1982’s synthpop-influenced Mystery Ticket fell short of the Top 200, reaching Number 205. His final album for Capitol Records, Mixed Emotions, was only released in France in 1985. Moon Martin released four more independent releases – Dreams on File (1992), Cement Monkey (1993), Lunar Samples (1995), and Louisiana Jukebox (1999) – before stepping away from the music business. He was working on a new album when he died on May 11, 2020.
