Irish singer-songwriter Andy White’s recording career began in 1985 with incendiary breakthrough EP ‘Religious Persuasion’.
His debut, ‘Rave on Andy White’, was a political protest album in the vein of Bob Dylan, addressing problems in Ireland and his native Belfast.
Since then, White has earned a global following for blending folk and pop stylings with a poet’s sensibility.
“I grew up listening to punk and The Beatles. Found my voice through writing poetry and playing folk music on an electric guitar. Hit the road with Billy Bragg’s ‘have guitar will travel’ philosophy. Thirty years later, I’m still learning.”
Each of the albums, re-released in a 12-CD box set ‘Studio Albums 1986–2016’, is a chapter in Andy’s life story and has its own musical style—rock, folk, psychedelic—tied together by his trademark lyrical wit.
Working with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Neil and Tim Finn, Andy has won Ireland’s top songwriting awards and toured the world many times over. A published author, his latest book is aptly titled ‘21st Century Troubadour’.
Collaborative projects include ALT, with Tim Finn (Split Enz) and Liam Ó Maonlaí (Hothouse Flowers); and Fearing & White, with Canadian songwriter Stephen Fearing.
Andy White is a singer-songwriter for our times, documenting the world and its chaos and beauty with remarkable insight. His new album is Imaginary Lovers, the latest chapter in this Irishman’s very individual odyssey.
