Born and raised in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California, Edward J Smith (aka Blaq-Smith) discovered a profound passion for music at a young age. He began his musical journey playing the drums at his uncle’s church, where he nurtured his love for rhythm and melody. By the age of 12, he expanded his talents by mastering the keyboard, setting the stage for a lifelong career in music production.
At just 15 years old, (Blaq) began producing music, showcasing a natural talent that caught the attention of industry insiders. By the age of 16, he achieved a significant milestone in his career when he signed with Capitol Records as a producer, where he had the privilege of collaborating with his cousin Christopher A. Buck from the acclaimed group N2U.
Following his high school graduation, (Blaq) pursued higher education, majoring in Audio Engineering and Music Production. During this time, he had the distinct honor of being mentored by his godfather, Levell McClain, a seasoned engineer with over 35 years of experience at DreamWorks. This mentorship proved invaluable, providing (Blaq) with the insights and skills necessary to excel in the competitive music industry.
Upon graduating from college, (Blaq) was afforded the opportunity to travel and work as an Audio Engineer on various tours, further honing his craft. In 2002, he signed with TUG/Platinum Stats Management Group, where he served as an in-house producer and audio engineer. This role allowed him to collaborate with some of the biggest names in the music business, solidifying his reputation as a skilled professional.
In 2009, seeking creative independence, (Blaq) transitioned to an independent producer, writer, and engineer. He continued to tour extensively, sharing the stage with renowned artists such as his older brother’s group, Konflic, as well as Ice Cube, The Game, DJ Quik, and many others. These experiences not only enriched his artistry but also expanded his professional network within the music industry.
Today, in 2025, (Blaq) stands at the helm of his own company, Blaq-Smith Entertainment, based in Texas. With a wealth of experience and an unwavering dedication to his craft, he continues to produce and engineer music that resonates with audiences around the world. (Blaq) remains committed to nurturing new talent and pushing the boundaries of creativity in the ever-evolving landscape of music.
