Surrealist, analogue pop workshop, Novelty Island performs gymnastic splits to have one foot in Liverpool and the other in London. The band/alter-ego/creative vehicle of songwriter/producer, Tom McConnell. Novelty Island was born in the basement of Abbey Road Studios, in touching distance of mythical tape vaults. The resultant, primary-colour psychedelia first emerged on the Welcome To Novelty Island... EP, a body of work blessed by BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and other critical gods. After the shores of Novelty Island turned stormy in 2020, McConnell booked an imaginary-summer holiday, left reality on the endless loop of the unclaimed baggage carousel and released the Suddenly On Sea EP. Those critical gods smiled once more and McConnell moved forward to the next square. Seeing the shapes his music makes, self-directed videos including The Desperately Strange find impossibilities made possible, like the drunken sailor who went on the greatest pub crawl of all time. Novelty Island’s governor also applies his hand to non-moving visuals, including the mind-boggling, never-ending Instagram account.
Since the run of debut EPs, Novelty Island has become a barely-holding dam, poised to flood a hurting world with happy home recordings that make up the forthcoming debut album 'How Are You Coping With This Century?' which comes out on Think Like A Key Records in October...
