DeLange (Frank de Lange, 1972) is a Dutch composer and pianist who creates lyrical, intimate music for solo piano and for piano ensembles. He experiences music as colors and shapes—a condition known as chromesthesia (sound-to-color synesthesia).
“For me, visualizing sounds has always come naturally. I compose music as a painter would approach a canvas: colors and shapes guiding my inspiration.”
Born and raised in a musical family, DeLange grew up immersed in the works of Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Satie, and Debussy, composers who shaped his deep-rooted passion for Romanticism. After completing classical training at the conservatory, he initially worked as an accompanist and session pianist. However, the urge to capture his own emotional experiences in music ultimately led him to compose original works. At the age of 46, DeLange felt he had finally reached a maturity and depth that allowed him to release his debut album, Images (September 2020).
Since then, DeLange’s music has quietly spread across borders, reaching millions of listeners — with especially strong followings in the United States, Türkiye, Canada, the Netherlands, and France. His first nationwide concert tour in The Netherlands sold out completely, establishing his reputation as a compelling live performer.
A new soundscape: Piano and horns
In October 2024, DeLange broadened his musical palette with the album La Présence d’un Rêve, exploring a new acoustic dimension by combining piano with a horn quartet. This acclaimed release received extensive airplay on Dutch national radio, including NPO Klassiek – Keihard Klassiek and Radio 1 – Vroege Vogels, and was honored as ‘Album of the Week’ on NPO Classical Radio.
In the Arms of Solitude – On Tour 2025
In 2025, DeLange embarks on his first theatre-based solo tour, following several successful concert tours in recent years. In the Arms of Solitude is an intimate and contemplative solo piano performance exploring the emotional landscape of solitude.
