Jewel Akens, born Jewel on 12 September 1933 in Houston, Texas, was an American singer. He began his musical journey singing in a church choir and later moved to Los Angeles with his family. In the late 1940s, he started his professional career as part of the band The Four Dots, releasing several singles. Concurrently, he performed as a duo with Eddie Daniels under the name Akens & Daniels. His breakthrough came when producer Herb Newman signed him to Era Records as a background singer. In early 1965, he recorded "The Birds and the Bees", which became an international hit, reaching number three on the US Billboard Charts and gaining popularity in European charts. The song's success was further amplified by Drafi Deutscher's cover version, "Heute male ich Dein Bild Cindy Lou", which topped the German Singles Chart. His subsequent single, "Georgie Porgie", did not achieve similar success, nor did his album The Birds and the Bees. Later in his career, he toured with The Monkees and produced a duet album for Ted Taylor and Little Johnny Taylor in 1973. He passed away on 1 March 2013 in Inglewood, California.
