Spitting Image, a British satirical television puppet show created by Peter Fluck, Roger Law and Martin Lambie-Nairn, originated in 1984. The series was produced by Spitting Image Productions for Central Independent Television over 18 seasons which aired on the ITV network. The show featured puppet caricatures of contemporary celebrities and public figures, including British Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major and the British royal family.The first episode of Spitting Image aired in 1984 with a laugh track, and the series quickly gained popularity, becoming one of the most-watched shows of the 1980s. The show's success led to collaborations with musicians such as Phil Collins and Sting. In 1986, Spitting Image released their first album Santa Claus Is On The Dole, followed by Spit In Your Ear in the same year. Their notable songs include "Da Do Run Ron" (1984) and "The Chicken Song" (1986), which reached Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. The series was nominated for and won numerous awards, including ten BAFTA Television Awards, and two Emmy Awards in 1985 and 1986 in the Popular Arts Category. Despite its initial success, viewing figures declined, leading to the show's cancellation in 1996. In 2018, Roger Law donated his entire archive to the University of Cambridge. The series was revived on BritBox in October 3rd, 2020 and again in July 2025 in an online format on YouTube.
