The Cumbrian-born rock vocalist Mike Harrison rose to prominence as the lead singer of Spooky Tooth, a band which had evolved from Art who were a Carlisle-based group. Art were signed to Chris Blackwell's Island label and after the addition of American keyboard player/vocalist Gary Wright, the band evolved into what became known as Spooky Tooth. Wright went on to have a successful solo career and is best known for his hit single 'Dream Weaver'.
Wright became Harrison's vocal foil in Spooky Tooth and the two singers formed a distinctive vocal partnership which defined Spooky Tooth's rock-orientated sound. The band recorded a handful of notable albums in the late sixties and early seventies but in 1974 after splitting up for the second time Harrison decided to pursue his solo ambitions. His early career was dogged by financial mismanagement which at one point saw Island Records taking royalties earned from Harrison's solo albums and using them to pay off debts accrued by Spooky Tooth. As a result Harrison became disillusioned with the music business and all but disappeared from the public eye for over 20 years. The band reformed in 1997 to record 'Cross Purpose' and shortly afterwards Harrison also joined the Hamburg Blues Band and continued to perform sporadically with Spooky Tooth. The singer died in March 2018 at the age of 75.
