The Unifics were an American soul group formed in 1966 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The original line-up included Al Johnson, Robert Hayes, George Roland, Marvin Brown, and Thomas Fauntleroy. Initially known as Al & the Vikings, the group changed their name to the Unique Five before settling on the Unifics. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Court of Love" in 1968, which peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number three on the US Billboard R&B chart. This success was followed by "The Beginning of My End", which hit number 36 on the Hot 100 and number nine on the R&B chart. The group's debut album, Court Of Love, was issued in 1968 under Kapp Records. The Unifics disbanded in 1972. In 2005, Al Johnson and Thomas Fauntleroy resurrected the group with new members Charlie Lockhart and Garrett Hall, releasing Unifics Return. After Al Johnson's death in 2013, the band continued with a new line-up that included Ned Harris and Bruce Justice, and they continued performing. Greg Cook died from pancreatic cancer on 8 July 2023, at the age of 72.
