Anishinaabe‑Canadian singer‑songwriter Adam Sturgeon, was born March 19, 1984, in Erin, Ontario, and later moved to Guelph where he began playing guitar and writing songs. After a brief junior‑hockey stint, Sturgeon formed WHOOP‑Szo in 2009 with Kirsten Kurvink Palm, releasing the two‑part album Qallunaat/Odemin in 2014. The band relocated to London, Ontario, and released Warrior Down in November 2019 on You’ve Changed Records; the album was longlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. In 2021 Sturgeon renamed the project Status/Non‑Status, issued the EP 1 2 3 4 500 Years, and released the sophomore album Surely Travel in 2022. The group collaborated with Daniel Monkman on Sewn Back Together (2022), also shortlisted for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize, and issued the surprise EP January 3 in January 2023. Big Changes album was released in 2026.
