Yael Miller is a composer, performer, and storyteller whose musical language blends rich vocal textures with the hypnotic sounds of analog synthesizers. Born in Tel Aviv to a diverse and multicultural family, her roots stretch from China and Poland to Morocco, Russia, and Spain, Yael’s identity and artistry are shaped by a tapestry of cultural histories and lived experiences. Through her music, she channels the lives of relatives affected by mental health struggles, weaving these personal narratives into her creations. Her journey, a musical pilgrimage from Tel Aviv to New York, Geneva, and Paris, continues to color her work, alongside her fascination with superheroes, contemporary poetry, and the beauty found in everyday moments and wanderlust.
From the moment she could listen, Yael was immersed in the sounds of Klezmer, Ladino, jazz, and opera. Her teenage years at Yigal Alon Arts High School introduced her to bold artists with powerful, unique voices such as David Bowie, Björk, Tom Waits, and Marilyn Manson, all of whom would go on to shape her eclectic sound. Her musical training : singing, piano, trombone and composition, has laid the foundation for her hybrid pop sound, which shifts between English, French, and Hebrew.
Between 2008 and 2016, Yael fronted Orioxy, a Geneva-based quartet, whose three albums garnered significant acclaim. In 2013, the group won the Grand Jury Prize at the Tremplin Jazz d’Avignon, and in 2015, they earned a spot in Les Inrocks’ “Ten Albums of the Year That Look Elsewhere.” Her artistry was further recognized through support from the Pro Helvetia foundation.
Her solo career took off in 2017 with the release of her debut EP, Yael Miller (Tfou-tfou Records), followed by the album 00-08 (Absilone) in 2018. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, one that brought her music to broader audiences and won her the Picture My Music competition. The resulting music video, directed by Mei Fa Tan, won both the Jury Prize and Audience Award at the TFFL International Film Festival. Her albums have received rave reviews from Télérama and Migros Magazine, and her track was featured on the Swiss Sheroes compilation.
In 2021, Yael co-founded Rhizomes, a band that mixes Hebrew and Arabic languages, with Donia Berriri on vocals and synths, Baptiste Germser on bass and bugle, Thomas Caillou on guitar, and Roland Merlinc on drums. The band won the Andrée Chedid Prize in 2022, while they also captured the attention of Bernard Lavilliers, who named them his "Coup de Cœur." Their shows, including Rhizomes Quartier Général, have featured special guest singers like Oum, Clémence Gabrielidis, Hatice Özer, Leila Mendez, and Bianca Iannuzzi.
Yael has also made her mark as an actress. She played in Michèle Millner’s LE CHOEUR DES FEMMES, hailed as one of the "Top 10 Plays of 2018" by Le Temps de Genève. She’s currently performing in the cine-performance MUERTO O VIVO, alongside Leila Mendez and Michel Tayeb. Since March 2024, she’s been part of 8 FEET DANCE, a multidisciplinary show by performance artist Violaine Lochu. The same year, Yael has composed the music and played in VIVRE DANS LE FEU, a play by Clara Mayer that explores the powerful poetry of women.
