Herminia Silva

Hermínia Silva was a Portuguese fado singer and actress born as Hermínia Silva Leite Guerreiro on October 23, 1907 in Lisbon. Silva achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by fado and comic fado that began with performances in revue theaters in 1926. Her recording career began in the 1930s with shellac discs released on the label HMV. Silva achieved professional recognition for performing in the film Aldeia da Roupa Branca (1938) and the film O Costa do Castelo (1943). Her discography included the single A Tendinha / Fado das Toiradas (1960) and the extended play O Bom Fado (1961). Silva achieved professional recognition for founding the fado house Solar da Hermínia which she operated between 1958 and 1982. Her recording career included the extended play A Hermínia canta Yé-Yé (1970) and the studio recording Isto é Fado (1970). Silva achieved professional recognition for receiving the Gold Medal of the City of Lisbon in 1980. She achieved professional recognition for receiving the Order of Prince Henry in 1985 and 1990. Silva died on June 13, 1993 in Lisbon.
