Virus was founded in La Plata, Argentina, on 11 January 1980 by the Moura brothers, with Federico Moura as lead vocalist. The group emerged from the local punk scene, quickly adopting a new‑wave aesthetic that blended rock and synth textures. Their breakthrough came with the 1981 debut album Wadu‑Wadu, featuring singles such as "Wadu‑Wadu" and "Soy moderno, no fumo", which secured a strong presence on Argentine rock radio. Virus released Recrudece (1982) and Agujero interior (1983) before achieving mainstream success with Relax (1984) and Locura (1985), the latter selling over 200,000 copies and earning a place in Rolling Stone Argentina’s 100 best albums list in 2007. The live album Vivo (1986) reached number 3 on Rolling Stone Spain’s best live albums list. The 1987 studio work Superficies de placer was later ranked 20th in a 2007 Rolling Stone Argentina list. After the death of vocalist Federico Moura in December 1988, the band continued with Marcelo Moura as frontman, issuing Tierra del Fuego (1989) and 9 (1998). A resurgence in the 1990s and 2000s saw releases such as Caja negra (2007) and 30 años de Locura (2015). Virus has been honored posthumously, with a 2023 documentary Imágenes paganas and a 2024 tour that attracted over 120,000 attendees at the Fiesta de la Independencia de Talca.
