Teeter tottering at the intersection where old meets new and East meets West, Lioness Kaur is a rapper who curates contrasting sounds and sonics, blending assorted beats with stellar bars on her hip hop palette to leave the mark of a distinguished artist.
A student of the game, with inspirations ranging from Biggie to A$AP Rocky, Prodigy to J. Cole, Pac to Drake; her favourites are too many to note. With her flow having been compared to Nas, her demeanor to Young M.A, and her use of syncopation to André 3000; Lioness Kaur is “Yours to Discover” like the Ontario she calls home.
Born in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga, Lioness Kaur grew up in the multicultural neighbourhood of East Credit (Sauga). She spent her weekends in Brampton, where her mom lived. Moving around a lot allowed Kaur to gain numerous different perspectives on life. Her Punjabi ethnicity and Sikh faith additionally expanded the scope of her world from the West, to the Eastern hemisphere.
An official uni dropout, Lioness Kaur left the University of Toronto in order to pursue a career as a rapper; stacking up money by working as a pre-board screening officer at Pearson Airport. Incidentally, the day she decided to drop out from uni was Rakim and J. Cole’s birthday. As they say, there are no coincidences.
First breakthrough: When 6ixBuzz reposted her “Mass Appeal Freestyle” video which went viral.
She has received a lot of hate to date but that doesn’t stop her, she’s a Taurus after all ;)
