Penance, an American doom metal band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was formed in 1990 by Mike Smail and Terry Weston, former members of Dream Death. Notable members included Mary Bielich from Novembers Doom and Richard Freund on bass. Their debut album The Road Less Travelled (1992) marked the first doom metal release for Rise Above Records. The band's second album, Parallel Corners (1994), was highly acclaimed. Penance toured extensively in Europe and disbanded in 2004. Post-breakup, they released The Road Revisited in 2005. The band reunited for performances at the Maryland Deathfest in 2007 and the Days of the Doomed festival in 2013.
