Joseph Horovitz, born on May 26, 1926, in Vienna, Austria, was a British composer and conductor who emigrated to England in 1938. He studied music at New College, Oxford, and composition at the Royal College of Music under Gordon Jacob. His career began in 1950 as musical director of the Bristol Old Vic. Horovitz conducted ballet and opera performances across Europe and the United States. Notable works include Alice in Wonderland (1953) and his fifth string quartet, premiered at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1969. His television compositions included "Rumpole of the Bailey" theme. He received numerous awards, including the Commonwealth Medal in 1959. Horovitz passed away on February 9, 2022.
