Waaberi, a Somali musical supergroup, was established in Somalia by members of the Radio Artists Association. Initially supported by the Somali government as part of the National Theatre of Somalia, Waaberi toured extensively across Africa, including performances in Egypt and Sudan, and also visited the People's Republic of China. Following a 1969 coup, the ensemble was renamed Waaberi, meaning "sunrise." The group continued its activities into the 1990s as a private organization. Vocalist Maryam Mursal, the first woman to play Somali jazz, was a notable member. In 1997, Waaberi performed at the English WOMAD festival and subsequently toured North America in 1998. They recorded New Dawn with Egyptian musician Hossam Ramzy.
