Martin Albert Mulry (born 2 September 1947 in Oldham, Lancashire, England) migrated to Sydney in 1966 and began his career as a singer‑songwriter, releasing the single "Julia" in 1970 and "Falling in Love Again" in 1971, which peaked at Number 11 on the Go‑Set National Top 60. After a brief solo stint, Mulry formed the Ted Mulry Gang in 1972, signing with Albert Productions and releasing the album Here We Are in 1974; the group’s breakthrough came with "Jump in My Car" (September 1975), which stayed at Number 1 on the Kent Music Report for six weeks. Subsequent releases such as "Struttin'" (1976), The Ted Mulry Gang Album (1977), and Ted Mulry Gang Live (1979) saw top‑ten singles including "Darktown Strutters' Ball", "Jamaica Rum", and "My Little Girl". Ted Mulry Gang disbanded in 1986 but briefly reformed in 1989 for the album Reunion, and a posthumous compilation The Essential Ted Mulry & Ted Mulry Gang was issued in 2013. Mulry announced a terminal brain tumour in February 2001; benefit concerts titled Gimme Ted followed, culminating in a double‑DVD release in 2003. He died of the illness on 1 September 2001 in Sydney, one day shy of his 54th birthday.
