Ph.D. is a British pop rock group formed in 1981, comprising Jim Diamond on vocals, Tony Hymas on keyboards, and Simon Phillips on drums. The band's name is an acronym of the initials of its founding members, as well as a nod to the title of the doctoral degree Philosophiæ Doctor. Ph.D.'s breakthrough moment came with their debut single "Little Suzi's On The Up", which was notable for being the fifth video aired on MTV's inaugural day. Their self-titled debut album, Ph.D., was released in 1981. The band achieved significant chart success in 1982 when their single "I Won't Let You Down" peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and reached number 5 in Australia. This success led to a re-release of their debut album, which entered the UK Albums Chart. Ph.D.'s second album, Is It Safe?, was released in 1983. However, the group disbanded shortly after when Diamond contracted hepatitis. Diamond later returned as a solo artist and had a Number 1 hit with "I Should Have Known Better" in November 1984. In 2006, Diamond and Hymas reformed Ph.D. as a duo. The band's third album, Three, was published by Voiceprint Records on February 2, 2009. Jim Diamond passed away on October 8, 2015.
