An Emotional Fish was formed in 1988 in Dublin, Ireland, by Gerard Whelan (lead vocals, percussion), Enda Wyatt (bass, vocals, keyboards), Martin Murphy (drums, percussion) and David Frew (guitar, vocals). The quartet emerged from a brief earlier collaboration between Gerard Whelan and Enda Wyatt, and they recorded their first material on a four‑track tape before signing to Mother Records in 1989. Their debut single "Celebrate" entered the Irish charts in 1989, peaked at Number 46 on the UK Singles Chart in June 1990, and reached the top five on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart, establishing the band’s early commercial presence. The self‑titled album An Emotional Fish followed in 1990, reaching Number 40 in the UK. In 1993 the group released Junk Puppets, featuring four tracks produced by David A. Stewart, and opened for U2 on the Zoo TV Tour. Sloper arrived in 1994 under ZYX Records in Europe and was issued in the United States two years later. After a brief period of inactivity, the band disbanded in December 1999 following a final Dublin performance. Martin Murphy died on 3 January 2017, and Enda Wyatt passed away on 26 November 2022. The band’s legacy endures through occasional reunions and the continued work of former members in subsequent projects.
