Love Spirals Downwards was an American dream pop group from California, formed in 1991 by multi-instrumentalist Ryan Lum and vocalist Suzanne Perry. In January 1991, Perry began singing with Lum, leading to the creation of their first three songs: "Forgo," "Mediterannea," and "Dead Language." These tracks were sent to various indie labels, including Projekt Records. The band adopted the name Love Spirals Downwards after hearing a radio broadcast exclaiming, "Love spirals upwards!" They changed it to "Downwards" to better fit their genre. Throughout the 1990s, Love Spirals Downwards released four full-length albums: Idylls (1992), Ardor (1994), Ever (1996), and Flux (1998). Notable collaborations included Jennifer Wilde on the album Ardor, with her vocals featured on "Sunset Bell." In 1999, Lum began releasing music under the moniker Lovespirals, in collaboration with Anji Bee.
