The Motes, a Canadian indie rock band from Truro, Nova Scotia, formed in 1994. The core members were J. LaPointe and Jon Hutt, with Daniel MacDonald and Craig Thibault joining for live performances. Their initial releases included cassettes such as Super Useless Powers and Secret Air Base, both released on their own label, Ant Records in 1994. In 1996, they collaborated with State Champs on a split single, "You'll Love the Epcot Plams/The New Physics". The Motes disbanded in 1997, but their music saw posthumous releases including The Remains of False Starts (2005) and Normandy Oddity (2018), which featured alternate versions and outtakes. In 2019, three original members reunited for a live performance at the Dartmouth Flood music festival.
