SonOfOld is the brainchild of South African singer-songwriter Nic Olsen, a seasoned
musician known for his contributions to the country’s alternative rock scene. Olsen
first made waves as a frontman and songwriter for the early 2000s band Perez,
which earned two South African Music Award nominations for “Best Rock Album” and
delivered four chart-topping hits. He also penned tracks for the indie-rock giants
Parlotones, including the platinum-certified anthem “Push Me to the Floor.”
Venturing into solo territory, Olsen launched SonOfOld with the acclaimed albums
Change is how you Feel and 3% Baby in 2008. Praised by Rolling Stone Germany,
these records showcased a dynamic range from acoustic pop with Elliott Smith-like
harmonies to a fusion of British pop and ’90s indie rock, highlighted by the
psychedelic ballad “See It Slow.”
In 2020, SonOfOld resurfaced with a self-titled album under Gallo Records, drawing
from material written over the previous decade. The follow-up EP, Ghosts (2022),
was celebrated as a rare gem, with each of its six tracks exhibiting unique identity
while maintaining a cohesive, distinctive style.
Now, Olsen is poised to release Echoes from a Silent Hill, crafted in collaboration
with South African producer Theo Crous and featuring Foo Fighters’ multi-
instrumentalist Rami Jaffee. With a sound echoing the likes of Beck, Jane’s
Addiction, and Neil Young, SonOfOld’s upcoming album promises to be a sonic journey that bridges the past with the present.
