I was born in Melbourne, Australia. When I was twelve years old I bought an old, left-handed guitar from a school friend. It changed my life. The first song I remember writing had a chorus line that began, “My wahine, my surfer girl.” I guess it neatly combined two other important aspects of my existence back then.
My musical adventures have been many: traipsing around London in the heyday of the Beatles, trying to interest record labels in my material (‘Some Consolation’ on the 2015 album Signs of Corrosion is one of those faraway songs); helping to start up a hippy community where I played guitar and sang locally in order to buy fuel for the tractor; developing what I think is a unique guitar sound and style for particular songs ('Ha Bedee Duranjah' on the 2018 album Synaptic Overflow and, more recently, 'Things Not Done' on my 2019 album, Rare Life).
In 2013, while on a Greek island, I set up a tiny, makeshift studio in a rent-free apartment, and throughout the winter I wrote, refined, arranged, and recorded a series of original songs. The result was my first solo album, Out of Nowhere... an eclectic mix that reviewers called ‘alternative folk’.
Since that experience, I have stuck with this loner approach to writing, producing, and recording music. It’s not that I don’t like collaborating...I just seem to be more creative when lost in my own little universe; and I hope that at least some people will get what I do.
