Daniel Okulitch, a Canadian bass-baritone, was born on January 30, 1976, in Ottawa, Ontario. He began his operatic career at age 12 as Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors with Calgary Opera. Okulitch studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music before his breakthrough role as Schaunard in Baz Luhrmann's production of La bohème on Broadway in 2002/03, earning an Ovation Award for Best Ensemble Performance from the Los Angeles Stage Alliance. He has since performed with opera companies across Europe and North America, notable roles include Don Giovanni, Almaviva, Figaro, and Ennis del Mar in Brokeback Mountain at Teatro Real in Madrid. Okulitch released his first solo album, The New American Art Song, in March 2011, featuring world premiere songs by Ricky Ian Gordon, Jake Heggie, Lowell Liebermann, and Glen Roven.
