As a young anthropology student, Richard Monségu played percussion and sang in the hedonistic worlds of cabarets, musical cafés, Algerian, Moroccan, Guinean, Ivorian, Afghan, gypsy and West Indian parties and weddings in France and abroad. These multiple fields of play and investigation into the social uses of popular music in situations of exile have naturally led him to engage in an understanding of the world in the service of colonized cultures. The solicitude he shows in friendly, affective and intellectual relationships, the sympathetic ear he listens to and the attentive observation of cultural cleavages nourish his artistic commitment and guide his aesthetic inspiration.
