The Rankin Family, a Canadian musical group from Mabou, Nova Scotia, was formed by siblings Geraldine Rankin, Genevieve Rankin, David Rankin, John Morris Rankin, and Raylene Rankin in the 1970s, later joined by Jimmy Rankin, Cookie Rankin, and Heather Rankin; the group’s earliest recordings were independent cassettes released in 1989 and 1990, featuring traditional jigs, reels and original songs. Their breakthrough came with the 1992 re‑release of Fare Thee Well Love by EMI, which achieved quadruple‑platinum status and produced the Top 40 single "Fare Thee Well Love". In 1995 the trio of Endless Seasons and North Country were released, followed by the country‑influenced Uprooted in 1998, and the 2007 reunion album Reunion. The group collaborated with The Chieftains on Fire in the Kitchen (1998) and Tears of Stone (1999), recording the Celtic track "An Innis Aigh" and "Jimmy Mo Mhile Stor". Their career included tours across Canada and appearances on CBC television. The Rankin Family received fifteen East Coast Music Awards, six Juno Awards, four SOCAN Awards, three Canadian Country Music Awards, and two Big Country Music Awards, reflecting sustained commercial success and cultural impact. Tragically, John Morris Rankin died in a car accident in 2000, and Raylene Rankin passed away from metastatic breast cancer in 2012; the group has since ceased performing together, marking the end of an era in Canadian folk‑country music.
